The oodlü Phonics Builder released as a standalone tool

Today we're pleased to say that we've added the oodlü Phonics Builder as a free standalone tool.  You can use it to build words on the screen using the correct grapheme and phoneme structure.  Then click the letters to sound out the word for learners.

There is even an advanced area so that you can filter on exactly the graphemes / phonemes you wish to use.

We look forward to hearing how you get on!

Oodlü working with UCL and Ateneo de Manila University

Today we are delighted to announce that oodlü are working with the PopChat project developed by UCL Knowledge Lab and Ateneo de Manila University

PopChat is a research project developed by UCL Knowledge Lab and Ateneo de Manila University that uses pop music videos to help children improve their English language comprehension.  The focus of PopChat is on detecting rhymes which is part of phonological awareness development; important for both reading and writing. Following initial research in the London and Manila, the team at UCL worked with oodlü to explore ways to allowing more teachers and students to use songs to help with learning.

Why not have a go at a game now:

To generate PopChat questions you just create a new Question Collection as normal.  We recommend that you use the "Bulk Create Questions" option to add the questions.  You'll see a new option in the dropdown list (not shown in the video) called "PopChat".  Simply select one of the songs you'd like to generate questions for and click "Generate Questions".  Ten questions will automatically be generated and added to your Question Collection.

This is an interesting project that uses natural language processing (NLP) to automagically generate the questions and we are delighted to be working with the Universities to bring this to our users.

A special thank you to Tunde and Kaska from UCL for their support with this.

Automatic audio generation for phonics questions released

At oodlü we are always trying to make things easier for you.  Today we have released automatic audio generation for the phonics questions that you can create.  Just type the word and boom, the audio will generate for you.  No need to record anything any more.

You can, of course, still upload your own audio if you don't like the version that's been created.

This short video explains how that works:
